Freetown as a settlement founded by the formerly enslaved, and what abolition meant on this peninsula.

Our guests have a rare opportunity to experience three aspects of the story: slavery at Bunce Island, the British slave castle that sent thousands of captives to South Carolina and Georgia; resistance at Old Yagala, a mountaintop refuge from which people could see slave raiders coming from miles away; and abolition in Freetown, home to the Black Poor from 1787, the Nova Scotians from 1792, the Jamaican Maroons from 1800 and the Liberated Africans after the British abolished the trade in 1807.
