King's Yard Gate

The Gateway to the King's Yard marks the compound where Africans freed from slave ships by the Royal Navy were received after landing at King Jimmy Wharf. There they were housed, recorded and given basic medical care before being settled in the colony's villages. The gate carries the date 1817 and an inscription dedicating the Royal Asylum and Hospital to Africans rescued from slavery.
The yard later became the Colonial Hospital and is now part of Connaught Hospital, whose entrance the gateway still frames. It was proclaimed a national monument in 1949.
