First peoples and kingdoms
The Bullom, Gola, Kissi, Baga and Nalou are among the oldest inhabitants of the coast and its hinterland. Encyclopaedia Africana traces the Mende, now the largest group, to Mande-speaking Mani invaders of the mid-1500s. Bullom craftsmen carved ivories to Portuguese order; examples are now held in museums in Italy and Denmark.
