Western Area Peninsula National Park

The Western Area Peninsula National Park covers the hilly heart of the Freetown Peninsula, part of the Upper Guinean forest, where rainforest runs down towards the Atlantic beaches. It is one of the country's biodiversity hotspots.
Wildlife includes western chimpanzees, Jenkins duikers, red and black-and-white colobus, sooty mangabeys and Diana monkeys, and even leopards. Some 316 bird species have been recorded in the peninsula forest, including the threatened green-tailed bristlebill.
The forest is easy to reach from Freetown by road, as the Peninsular Highway loops around its edge. Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary lies within the park.
