Turtle Islands

The Turtle Islands are a remote group of eight low-lying sandy islands in the Atlantic just west of Sherbro Island. Several are home to fishing communities, and the beaches are lined with palms and mangroves above calm, clear water suited to swimming and snorkelling.

The islands' appeal is their isolation. Visitors can join village tours, day trips to Sei with lunch and swimming, or sport-fishing outings. Hoong island is off-limits to everyone except initiated men. Overnight stays are basic: a rustic guesthouse on Baki or camping arranged by a tour operator.

The easiest route is by speedboat from Freetown or the Banana Islands, about three hours each way depending on tides and sea conditions. Boats also leave from Bonthe on Sherbro Island; arrange with a local operator in advance.
