Tasso Island lies in the Sierra Leone River estuary, upriver from Freetown and a short distance from Bunce Island. In the slave-trade era it served as a plantation supplying food to captives held on Bunce Island and to the British troops stationed there.
Today the island is home to Temne communities in four towns and is known for its birdlife. An ecotourism camp opened in 2017, run by the Tasso Ecotourism Project, with a handful of beachside chalets and a restaurant serving Sierra Leonean dishes. Canoe trips, bird-watching and island walks are offered.
Day trips from Freetown usually stop at Bunce Island for a history tour before continuing to Tasso.
