St John's Maroon Church

St John's Maroon Church was built by the Maroons, returnees from Jamaica who arrived in Freetown in 1800. The land was granted in 1820 and the church was erected around 1822, making it one of the oldest places of worship in the city.

The small white building stands in its own grounds behind a low white wall on Siaka Stevens Street, in the part of Freetown once called Maroon Town. It is the only church named after one of the colony's original settler groups, and it was proclaimed a national monument in 1956.
