St Charles Church, Regent

In 1816 the colonial government paid for a stone church at Regent, one of the villages founded for Liberated Africans. It was named after Governor Charles MacCarthy, who supported the building, and the Monuments and Relics Commission describes it as the first stone church built in West Africa.
The church stands in the old King's Yard, where newly freed Africans were received on arrival; a section of the King's Yard wall survives. Church and wall were proclaimed a national monument in 1959.
