Sierra Leone River Estuary

The Sierra Leone River Estuary, fed by the Rokel River, separates Freetown from Lungi and the Bullom shore. The Monuments and Relics Commission describes it as the largest natural harbour in Africa, and Bunce Island lies within it.
The estuary is listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Its mangroves and mudflats support fisheries, coastal communities and waterbirds.
