Old Yagala Village

Old Yagala is a stone-and-mud settlement on high ground, built by the Limba people in the 18th century as a defensive refuge from slave raiders. Its three sub-towns, Yagala, Katombo and Katenteye, were ruled by Limba kings who used the height to resist the slave trade.

Old houses, royal graves and a single water source hidden under a large stone can still be seen. The town was gradually abandoned in the 20th century as people moved down to New Yagala below.
