Old City Boundary Guns

Three late-18th-century cannon, probably taken from a condemned slave ship, were half-buried upright to mark the boundaries of old Freetown. The Monuments and Relics Commission dug them out and proclaimed them in 1953, mounting them on stone plinths with brass plates.

The oldest, the 'Kissy Gun', marked the line between Freetown and Granville Town around 1801 and gave the Up Gun area its name. It is the only one of the three still easy to see. The others, on the old Leicester Road and at Pademba Road and Jomo Kenyatta Road, are hard to find.
