Masakpaidu Earthworks

Masakpaidu, also recorded as Masabendu, is an abandoned village in Nimiyama Chiefdom. It was one of several Kono villages fortified before the protectorate and dates from about 1800. It stood on raised ground at the point where the Bafi and Bagbe rivers meet to form the Sewa.
A ring of cotton-tree stakes enclosed the village, and some took root, leaving stumps that survive. A ditch about 300 yards long ran outside, crossed by removable pole bridges. The village was abandoned after it was sacked around 1893. The earthworks were proclaimed in 1949.
