Martello Tower
Monument · Tower Hill, near Parliament, Freetown
After repeated attacks on Freetown by Temne forces under King Tom, Governor Day laid the foundation stone of a Martello tower on Tower Hill in April 1805. It copied the towers then being built along England's south coast.
Around 1870 the tower was cut down and topped with an iron water tank that fed Government House. It was proclaimed a national monument in 1961 to save it from demolition when the Parliament building was built nearby.
