John Obey Beach

John Obey Beach lies just north of Bureh Beach. Unlike most peninsula beaches it is not next to a village or suburb, so it feels quiet and secluded. From above it looks like a sandbank: a narrow strip of sand between the Atlantic and a double lagoon formed by a river estuary.
The ocean can have a strong undercurrent, so the lagoon is the better place to swim. An eco resort behind the inlet rents paddle boats for exploring the lagoon, and locals sell simple meals, especially at weekends.
Bring your own vehicle or hire a taxi for the day and ask the driver to wait, as taxis for the return trip are hard to find.
