John Newton's House, Plantain Island

On the northern tip of Plantain Island are the remains of a slave factory linked to John Newton: part of a compound wall, a silted pit that may be a barracoon entrance or a well, building foundations and a cannon. Newton worked on the island around 1744 under a slave trader and was badly treated there.

He later made further voyages as a slave trader before leaving the sea, entering the church and writing hymns including 'Amazing Grace'. The ruins were proclaimed in 1949. The Commission's report of that year described a large fishing village on the island.
