Heddle's Farm

These are the ruins of a house on the old Leicester Road, dating from 1820, with a commanding view over Freetown. It passed through several notable owners before going in 1859 to Charles Heddle, a leading merchant and pioneer of the groundnut trade.

Over the years it served as a private home, the Governor's country residence, a convalescent home and later a Forestry Department residence. In the 1960s it became part of the Fourah Bay College botanical gardens. It was proclaimed a national monument in 1948.
