Fort Thornton
Monument · State House, Tower Hill, Freetown
The fortifications on Smith's Hill, now Tower Hill, were built between 1792 and 1805. Inside stood the Governor's house, government offices such as the post office, and the garrison barracks. The fort was named in honour of Henry Thornton, chairman of the Sierra Leone Company.
When the buildings were rebuilt as the present State House, the Commission had the bastions proclaimed a national monument (1949) so they would be kept in the new building. The bastions are much restored, set in gardens with cannon.
