De Ruyter Stone

At King Jimmy Wharf, below Connaught Hospital and facing the Rokel estuary, lies a large syenite boulder carved with the names of Dutch Admiral De Ruyter and his second-in-command. They took on water here in 1664, during the Anglo-Dutch War. The Commission's guide calls it Freetown's oldest monument.
The stone was rediscovered in 1923 beside Peter's Brook, once a well-known watering place for ships. Proclaimed in 1948, it has been reburied between inspections for protection, so ask locally whether it can be seen.
