Captain Lendy's Grave, Waiima

In 1893, at Waiima in Fiama Chiefdom, British and French forces who were allies fired on each other by mistake on a dark, misty morning, each taking the other for Samori's sofa warriors. Captain Lendy on the British side and Lieutenant Maritz on the French side were killed, along with other soldiers.

The two officers were buried where they fell and their fellow officers raised a memorial cross over them. In 1933 the government erected a larger memorial that incorporates the original cross. The site was proclaimed a national monument in 1965.

A 2007 inspection recorded the memorials as well kept in a cleared enclosure a short distance from the present village, under large cotton trees.
