Black Johnson Beach

Black Johnson Beach is a short black-sand cove in the central part of the Freetown Peninsula, where the Whale River flows out of the rainforest into the sea. Palms and forest surround the beach, and the water is usually calm enough for swimmers of all levels.
Mangroves around the beach can be explored on foot or by boat with a local guide, and fishermen can take visitors out on the water. An eco-resort offers beach huts and grilled seafood.
The beach is away from villages, so you need your own transport: it is about an hour's drive from Freetown, and it is best to hire a taxi for the day with the driver waiting. John Obey Beach is about 10 minutes' drive to the south.
